Gun Violence touches the Ed Fund
As the mayhem from guns continues, ironies will inevitably
occur. In 2002, sixteen-year-old Dante Rodriguez was a first
prize ($500) winner in our first annual essay contest on the
subject of gun violence.
Dante was a quiet kid who seemed to keep to
himself, but it was evident that he had some talent and potential.
He came to the award ceremony alone, unaccompanied by family,
and accepted the award sheepishly but with evidence of a pride
that was internalized.
Dante, now age 20, died April 19, 2006 as a
result of injuries sustained in a car crash. He was a passenger
in a car that became involved in a chase after police reported
gunshots being fired from the car.
